eXRAD is an entirely new approach to delivering e-business applications to Java web platforms. Neither a development framework nor a developer IDE, eXRAD is a pre-written generic web application.

eXRAD e-business solutions are built by defining requirements in XML form. These requirements include database access details, validation rules, presentation options and navigational logic. The eXRAD application translates these XML specifications at run-time into enterprise-class thin-client e-business functionality. No program code needs to be written, and there is no code generation.

eXRAD uses no proprietary middleware - it is a Java web application, implementing a model-view-controller design pattern. There is also no proprietary workstation component - eXRAD applications can be built using any XML editor or text editor. The appearance of pages can be fully customised using HTML templates and Cascading Style Sheets.

Since the delivery of eXRAD solutions does not involve any conventional programming, the skills required to deliver these solutions are very limited. A basic knowledge of XML, plus an understanding of SQL and relational databases is all that's required.

eXRAD represents a compelling alternative to the "buy or build" dilemma. Using eXRAD, customers can realise the time and cost savings of a "bought" solution, while benefiting from the flexibility of a "built" solution.
